Mesh-Free Hernia Repair in NYC and NJ
Many hernias can be repaired without mesh, but not all of them. Mesh-free repair closes the weak spot with your own tissue and strong sutures, so no implant stays in your body. Whether it is right for you depends on the type and size of your hernia, your health, and your goals.
Shouldice repair for groin hernias. The Shouldice operation reinforces the back wall of the groin by overlapping layers of your own tissue and stitching them with a continuous suture. It is a classic mesh-free repair and tends to fit a first-time groin hernia of manageable size in a healthy patient who prefers to avoid mesh.
Mesh-free repair for ventral hernias. Small belly button (umbilical) and upper abdominal (epigastric) hernias can often be closed with sutures alone. In selected patients, extra steps may be used to help the tissue come together safely.
When mesh is the better choice. Larger hernias, hernias that have come back, and hernias on both sides are often better served with mesh, because repairs without mesh in larger ventral hernias tend to recur more often. Your surgeon will tell you honestly which option is safest for you.
How you can help your repair. Stop smoking, work toward a healthy weight, keep blood sugar controlled, and follow the lifting rules after surgery.
Who performs it. Mesh-free repair is performed by our Hernia Experts, including Dr. Philip George, MD, FACS. If you already have mesh that is causing problems, see our Mesh Removal Program.
